Toot Toot!
Excuse me for tooting my own horn, but I just found out that a drawing I did a year ago has been used to illustrate a story in the newly released book, Still the Same Hawk; Reflections on Nature and New York, published by Fordham University Press. The drawing itself was controversial and although the editorial assistant wanted it for the cover, it was nixed because it showed a dog's penis. But he, Will Cerbone, my savior, fought for it and the powers that be finally decided that it wasn’t going to kill anyone if they saw it, so they used it, and I thank them.
Dog over Manhattan
The illustration accompanies Robert Sullivan's story, "The Dark Side; or, My Time Spent in the Nature that People would Rather Not Think About." Sullivan is the author of many books, one of which is titled, RATS: observations on the history and habitat of the city's most unwanted inhabitants.
Thanks also to Melissa Cooper who commissioned the painting for her wonderful nature blog, outwalkingthedog. Here is the original post: http://outwalkingthedog.wordpress.com/2011/04/25/city-hawk-snatches-chihuahua/
More about the new book at: fordhampress.com, search for "Still the Same Hawk."
Hurrah. I'm tooting your horn, too: toot toot! So happy this is being published and in such illustrious company. I love reading Robert Sullivan's work.
ReplyDeleteThanks Melissa! If it wasn't for you, there'd be no dog over Manhattan drawing. I wonder where he is right now?
Deletehooray to both of you! i just read melissa's piece--and charlotte's illustration works perfectly.
ReplyDeletei really cant find much fault with a hawk doing what hawks do...they are predatory birds. and quite handy at it!
Thanks Susan, I will let M know what you said, also about your new endeavor; she would love it! I am working on something for it (hometown) but this period between turkey day and X-mas flies away too fast; i end up getting nothing done!
Deletesince you are an artist and do those wonderful self-portraits...you also be one of our self-portrait people! you and Ratty...i'd love that!!
ReplyDeletewow.... i just decided to go back and read your very first post (well, really, i was worried your rat's name wasnt Ratty...and i still dont know that because i got sidetracked...).
i see that you knew Moki Cherry!
moki was a very good friend of a very good friend of mine, who actually named her daughter Moki. ...my friend is Marit Brown...she's Norwegian--but she lived in NYC and when our kids were young, her Moki and my benjamin were best friends. she went to the big memorial gathering in sweden when moki died..how strange the threads that link so many of us...
Oh, my breath just went away. Back again. Moki was one of my dearest friends when i lived in NYC, and then continued to be, along with a bunch of us theatre types (back then) called "the ladies." I wonder if your friend knew Lanny Harrison? I'd come for a visit, after leaving NY, and we'd have wild parties of much drinking, dancing, smoke and food, just the bunch of us who used to perform together in a little space in Hells kitchen; i'll have to write about it one day. We are all still mourning Moki.

It is truly amazing how the threads that link us draw closer as we get older. I am mind boggled.
And ratty is the name of my rat and all the rats I've ever had. Very perceptive! I love the idea of doing a self portrait with ratty.
oh, charlotte: please do a self-portrait for us with ratty. or, i'd really love it if you'd send me a bit of writing...
ReplyDeletei am leaning on a few of my peeps to get them to squeeze out a 250-words-or-less memoir piece on "hometown" for the debut of Run to the Roundhouse, Nellie. would you, could you?
if so: stlandry@run-to-the-roundhouse-nellie.com
(no pressure. heh heh.)
Hee hee, I would love to! let me see what i can manage. I will definitely do something....
